Guyana's President Irfaan Ali recently expressed strong disapproval regarding the current visa restrictions affecting travelers within the Caribbean. During his address at the State of the Tourism Industry Conference 2026 in Georgetown, Ali argued that existing biometric and visa protocols are obsolete and act as significant obstacles to the region's growth. He emphasized that these bureaucratic hurdles negatively impact the tourism sector, limit regional integration, and complicate the logistics for hosting major international events. According to the President, maintaining such restrictive systems is incompatible with the modern requirements of a thriving tourism industry. He called for a modernization of these processes to facilitate easier movement across the region, suggesting that the current approach is akin to a 'stone age' system that prevents the Caribbean from reaching its full economic potential in the global travel market.
