A coalition consisting of forty individuals and four distinct organizations has formally contested the Environmental Protection Agency's ruling to waive the requirement for an Environmental Impact Assessment for the Kurupung uranium project. The project, managed by the Canadian firm U92 Energy Corp. in Region Seven, was granted an exemption by the agency, a move that has drawn significant opposition. Among the petitioners is Dr. Vincent Adams, the former director of the EPA, who joins other concerned parties in seeking a reversal of this decision. The appellants argue that the potential environmental risks associated with uranium exploration necessitate a more rigorous evaluation process than the one currently approved by the regulatory body. This legal challenge highlights growing public scrutiny over mining activities and the oversight role of environmental authorities in Guyana.
