The Guyana Police Force has launched an internal investigation following reports that police and immigration officers are accepting bribes to facilitate the illegal movement of Cuban nationals toward Brazil. These allegations emerged after individuals detained by the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit claimed that law enforcement personnel were demanding higher payments to allow them to cross the border through Lethem. Commissioner of Police Clifton Hicken has initiated a probe through the Office of Professional Responsibility to verify these claims. The investigation was prompted by social media reports and statements from detainees who alleged that officials were profiting from the illicit transit. Commissioner Hicken emphasized that any officer found guilty of corruption or misconduct will face strict disciplinary measures and legal consequences, stating that such behavior will not be tolerated within the force. Authorities are currently urging the public to provide any relevant evidence to assist with the ongoing inquiry.
