Guyana’s Opposition Leader, Azruddin Mohamed, was taken into police custody at his Eccles residence this Wednesday. Authorities are investigating his acquisition of government surveillance footage related to two shooting incidents from earlier this month. Deputy Commissioner Wendell Blanhum confirmed the arrest, which reportedly also involves allegations of a corrupt transaction with a police officer. Investigators claim the officer admitted to providing the video in exchange for GY$800,000. This development follows previous legal challenges for Mohamed, who is currently out on bail regarding charges of illegal firearm possession and attempting to obstruct justice. The politician had previously released the footage to challenge claims made by Senior Superintendent Prem Narine, whom he accuses of an assassination attempt. Meanwhile, the detained officer’s family has sought legal intervention from the High Court to secure his release. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities examine the circumstances surrounding the leaked material.
