Two men residing in West Coast Demerara have successfully undergone kidney transplant surgeries at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) this past September. The patients, aged 31 and 38, required the procedure due to kidney failure and were previously dependent on dialysis. Because direct donation from their respective spouses was not medically viable due to compatibility issues, the medical team facilitated a paired kidney exchange. Under this arrangement, each wife donated a kidney to the other woman's husband. Following the surgeries, both men have been discharged from the hospital and are currently exhibiting positive signs of recovery with stable kidney function. This medical milestone highlights the hospital's capacity to perform complex transplant procedures to improve patient outcomes.
