As part of the Agriculture Month 2026 celebrations, the Guyanese government has inaugurated a series of weekly farmers markets aimed at reducing food costs for the public. Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha announced that these markets, starting at the Sophia Exhibition Centre, seek to eliminate intermediaries who inflate prices for consumers. By connecting producers directly with buyers, the initiative intends to ensure that farmers receive fair compensation for their labor. This strategy, initially proposed by President Irfaan Ali to address the rising cost of living, will be implemented nationwide on a monthly basis. Furthermore, the government continues to develop a national food hub in Yarrowkabra in collaboration with Blumberg Grain to bolster the country's position as a consistent food supplier for both regional and international markets.
